This year’s Silence Festival in Kaukonen, Kittilä, Finland, offers two special performances connected to the ancient kantele improvisation.

On Fri, June 10, Drop of a Light – Tom Collin & Arja Kastinen at 3, 4 and 5 p.m.

Premiere of a new cross-disciplinary collaboration created in Kaukonen village during the festival week.

Floor acrobat Tom Collin challenges his acrobatic abilities as he becomes a source of light and blurs the boundary between seen and not seen. Arja Kastinen starts playing at the beginning of the first performance and mutes the kantele at the end of the last performance.

On Sat, June 11, Villa Magia, Ilona Korhonen & Arja Kastinen at 3 and 7  p.m.

Premiere of a new cross-disciplinary collaboration created in Kaukonen village during the festival week.

Ilona Korhonen performs two runosongs which describe cosmogonic acts of creation at the beginning of time – The Creation of the Kantele and The Creation of the World – and Arja Kastinen improvises with different small kanteles.
