The Kanteletupa-workshops will be held twice this autumn: October 15 and November 26 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Helsinki Music Centre’s Ground Foyer. The third workshop will be held in the Organo hall in January 29, 2023. Welcome!

The workshops will be part of the research project The Dialogue of Creativity.

At the workshops, we will try out and improvise with different playing techniques on the small kanteles. Anyone interested is welcome, regardless of musical background. The workshops are organized by the Folk Music Department of the Sibelius Academy and Arja Kastinen is the instructor.

In the autumn workshops, we are preparing for the concert Kanteletupa – a joint time journey to the origins of music, which will be held in the Organo hall of the Helsinki Music Centre on February 11, 2023. In the concert, creative music-making and improvisation possible for everyone are built in dialogue with the audience. The concert will be led by Pauliina Syrjälä, Eva Väljäots, and Arja Kastinen.

If you have your own kantele, bring it with you. Small kanteles are also reserved for loan use during the workshop, so you can come along and try it out, even if you don’t own an instrument or have any playing experience. The workshops are free.

The aesthetics of the improvisation is based on the attached diagram:
